Well, another blow for Gordon Brown’s sunny sojourn in Suffolk that has been struck by the Lords constitution committee who describe the plans to extend detention to 42 days as “muddled“. They argue that this could indeed undermine the independence of judges and the collapse of trials.
“We are unconvinced that the government have properly thought through this aspect of their proposed scheme.”
This is putting it politely, to the further extremes of politeness. NL cares not a jot for civil liberties or balancing the security of people generally against the liberty of the individual.
The political need is to be able to posture as being tough the next time their is a terrorist incident by locking up a pile of innocent but unpopular people: and to put the judges under manners in the political fallout from an atrocity. 42 days is borne from the deepest form of political cynicism and the willingness to use terrible events for politcal gain.
