Films to see
January 2, 2009Oh well starting 2009 film schedule on time by seeing the film about Che Guevara either tonight or tomorrow. I like Steven Soderbergh. One of my favourite films of the 1980s was Sex, Lies, and and Videotape. I recall seeing it in a multiplex as most of the films I saw during the mid-late 1980s were in indie cimemas. And it was refreshing to see a film like that (I saw it twice in a week) as I was sick of the crap that was being churned out at the time. Soderbergh doesn’t stick to type, you can’t label him or pin him down on specific genre. His range includes slick bubble gum for the eye, Ocean’s Eleven (in saying that I totally enjoyed the first one) to the more gritty Traffic. And he tackled Tarkovsky’s Solaris with style. Excellent film. So I have high hopes of Che (Peter Bradshaw in the Guardian gives it 3 out of 5)
Unlike Stephen Daldry’s The Reader (Der Vorleser) which sounds …. unimpressive. I read Schlink’s book when it was first published, found it interesting. I am not too keen on Daldry’s work, I found The Hours overly theatrical. And Billy Elliott a foul piece of revisionism regarding the 1984-1985 miners’ strike. A sneery middle class interpretation.
So I may wait until it comes out on DVD as by then HarpyMarx may have entered the 20th century and have bought a swanky DVD player..
Hey, the 21st century is just too technologically overwhelming for me….tiny steps as opposed to a giant leap.
Oh My!
