Iraq inquiry: secrets and lies

westmincath

Tony Blair urged Gordon Brown to hold the independent inquiry into the Iraq war in secret because he feared that he would be subjected to a “show trial” if it were opened to the public, the Observer can reveal.

Well, he would say that, wouldn’t he? These are the words of a former PM who knows he’s up to his neck in it, knows if this inquiry is made public then we will know the level of his complicity in the Iraq war. But Bliar would prefer his dirty squalid secrets to stay secret rather than to explain himself and allow himself open to public scrutiny at an open and accountable inquiry.

Oh, and his chum Alastair Campbell backs the secrecy of this inquiry. Well, he would too, wouldn’t he..? Another one implicated up to his neck in war crimes….

And as Alan Simpson (Chair of Labour Against the War) says:

Neither the public nor parliament will understand how the prime minister’s ‘new era of openness’ can begin with an Iraq inquiry held behind closed doors.

    Par for the course really.
Brings to mind a saying that is close to my heart: If you want something done right, do it yourself! A saying we, the public, should take to heart and act on since until we do these ‘leaders’ will continue to do what suits them and those they really represent i.e the elite. Not until we dispense with these ‘leaders’ and institute real democracy which includes the economy and production will we see a world worth leaving to our children.

I do remember seeing an awful lot of people demonstrating about going to war on Iraq but that didn’t seem to make the slightest bit of difference Selma.

I agree Selma, if we don’t anything then things would be a lot worse. Politics and political change is a long hard slog…I am in it for the long haul.

The barbaric and illegal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan galvanised millions of people. Yes, we didn’t stop it but it made a significant difference to the government. I marched in Feb 2003, and marched on the other demos, active in my StW group (picketed my MP Keith Hill re his appalling stance on the war).

Icouldn’t believe the sheer numbers of people marching in 2003 and the powerlessness and anger was represented in the slogan: ‘not in my name’!

The warmongers couldn’t say afterwards that nobody protested…millions protested globally.

I also think the global anger and militancy (and lets not forget the anti-war movement in the States is still very strong esp. in the TU movement) made the imperialist ruling classes think twice about attacking Iran.

There have been successes, and yes there have been soul destroying defeats but if we gave up and believed that nothing makes the slightest difference then nothing would change or would have the capacity to change.

If various organised campaigners throughout history gave up the struggle then we wouldn’t have the civil liberties, freedoms and human rights we have now.

No one ever said it was easy. And you don’t win every battle, you are not going to. But you never give up.

What a complete nerve! Nuthin’ like democracy then — so much for exporting our home brand to poor deprived nations. How much has that fucka made directly because he helped start the war?

A searchlight needs to be shone into every dirty little corner of this affair.

He’s definitely laughing all the way to the bank re the amount cash he made…. as, erm, peace envoy…

Indeed, every dirty sordid secret needs to be thrown into the light.
