Amnesty on Operation Cast Lead

July 2, 2009

At 11.30am on 27 December 2008, without warning, Israeli forces began a devastating bombing campaign on the Gaza Strip codenamed Operation “Cast Lead”. Its stated aim was to end rocket attacks into Israel by armed groups affiliated with Hamas and other Palestinian factions. By 18 January 2009, when unilateral ceasefires were announced by both Israel and Hamas, some 1,400 Palestinians had been killed, including some 300 children and hundreds of other unarmed civilians, and large areas of Gaza had been razed to the ground, leaving many thousands homeless and the already dire economy in ruins.

Amnesty have published their report on the brutal murderous attack on Gaza by the Israeli State.

Operation Cast Lead was initiated two days after Christmas 2008 with the involvement of former US Deputy Secretary of State John ‘death squads’ Negroponte who happened to be in Tel Aviv.

The report by Amnesty is a comprehensive examination of the bombardment and unfortunately I haven’t had much of a chance to read it, including recommendations.

Facts and figures can be viewed here about the 22 day bombardment.

Israeli State is not very pleased with the report as Amnesty accuses them of war crimes and counter-accusations from Israel that Amnesty ‘was manipulated by Hamas’…

Israel is an apartheid colonial-settler state based on violent oppression and a racist ideology, who should be in the dock for war crimes…

India’s Stonewall: 148 year old homophobic law overturned

July 2, 2009

The appalling homophobic Section 377, which was an oppressive 148 year old hangover from British colonialism, has been overturned in India.

Great day for justice, civil liberties, sexuality and sexual freedom, along with the ongoing fight for lesbian and gay liberation.

The ruling said: “In the Indian Constitution, the right to live with dignity and the right of privacy both are recognised as dimensions of Article 21. Section 377 IPC denies a person’s dignity and criminalises his or her core identity solely on account of his or her sexuality and thus violates Article 21 of the Constitution. As it stands, Section 377 IPC denies a gay person a right to full personhood which is implicit in notion of life under Article 21 of the Constitution.”

The decision was made in response to a case filed by Naz Foundation India. The ruling can still be opposed by the government.
