Clare Solomon confronts Boris Johnson
We blocked Boris Johnson leaving the GLA from a back exit at around 2pm onwards.

Boris blustering
Clare Solomon and Boris Keep Your Promise (I don’t know the woman’s name who was representing them) stopped Boris from moving, everytime he moved we blocked him. They confronted him about his election promise and he blustered and blundered like the buffoon he is when answering.

Outside the back exit of the GLA: A job well done!!!!
Boris argued that there will be 3 more Rape Crisis Centres in London (btw there is only one Rape Crisis and that’s based in Croydon) but didn’t give a timescale nor any indication where the funding will come from.

Outside the GLA
Boris Johnson made an election promise that 3 new Centres would be funded. A strategy paper was launched in April 2009 calling ‘for action to end violence against women’. The strategy is open for public consultation until 20th July 2009 (today).

"Boris keep your promise"!
Great day, vibrant and dynamic, lots of chanting, with some direct action thrown in, it certainly put a spoke in Johnson’s wheel!
Met some lovely women involved in the campaign and good luck for the protest outside the Miss England final tonight. Further objectification and commodification of women.
See as well The F Word.

Top stuff !

I’m really glad you could go and therefore publicise the protest. I wrote up a post on an Avon Sales Leader website which has hundreds of members nationwide. Exactly zero people responded.

Thanks Eddie. It was a good day.
Sorry to hear about the lack of response earwicga.

It’s alright Harpy – hopefully at least one person read it! Just linking on there to this piece as well.

I read it! I would be there if I were not in the states. Go!

Isn’t Boris an CONservative?
It is all a joke – one in Croydon – even with the other 3 proposed ones (which if they existed would be a good start) it is still under resourced I think.
Talking from population and rape statistics alone… 4 is far from adequate.
(Also, a kind reminder to point out, the Clare link dont work for me, I did manage to work around it but just thought you might liked to know in case you wanted to edit the post.)

July 21, 2009 at 3:34 pm
Am I fine, just been plagued by allergies…and insomnia, usually sleep well, blame the weather and pollution.
July 21, 2009 at 3:45 pm
Hope you get better soon.
I am glad its not swine flu – that really concerns me that does.
I am sure the 1/4 billion pounds they are saving from housing allowance will be sent on compensation for swine flu?

How did the situation arise that the whole of London has only one Rape Crisis Centre?
July 21, 2009 at 12:56 pm |
And he said they would be delivered by 2012. This is not godd enough. Women are getting raped NOW and cannot wait until he finishes his Mayoral term to get support.
No doubt when his term is over he will fluster along and say that he doesn’t have the time or resources left to carry out his promise.
God, I hate Boris bafoon Johnson. AND HE’S A RACIST, HOMOPHOBIC BIGOT!

Absolutely Clare!

Well done. That was a good bit of activism. And thanks for posting about it. It seems funding for women’s services is under threat every where you look, in this economic crisis.
July 21, 2009 at 6:54 pm |
Thanks, and I agree Carol, we need further action to keep the pressure up!

Do you really think surrounding someone, blocking of their movements and forcing them to bend to your will is appropriate behaviour in support of a rape crisis centre?
July 21, 2009 at 8:16 pm |
What would be a suitable alternative Sarah? Sit at home and ignore the current trends of attack on women by taking away services such as rape support? It’s not just one Rape Crisis centre – the whole network of support is massively underfunded and closing down or closed.
