So the pomp has started, along with the countdown. Boris is chipper, so is Tessa….. Oh yes, the Olympics are on track….London 2012. And the various talking heads spouting forth about what legacy this sporting event will leave.
Well, I can think of one in an instant…debt. Originally the Olympics was supposed to cost the taxpayer something in the region of £2.4 billion. It now stands at an astronomical £9.3 billion (and it could go beyond £10 billion). Oh, and private finance was supposed to sub the rest…but there’s an economic crisis. Yes, there’s smiles from Boris and Tessa while the costings spiral out of control.
But once the Olympics have been and gone, what then? What will happen to the venues and apartments (half, apparently will be ‘earmarked’ for social housing).
And well I never…someone is making a profit…!
The other legacy coming out of the Olympics was grassroots sports projects but funding has failed to materialise. And lets not forget the raids on public money to fund this 2 week elitist spectacle.
Well, I for one will be definitely out of London come the grand event…..
I was in my local Tesco and the news that Britain had got the gig of the Olympics was broadcast over the tannoy. People actually cheered – it was totally surreal.
What a complete waste of money, unless Boris and/or Tessa accidentally get speared with a javelin or accidentally have their stupid heads separated from their bodies by aberrant discus throwers. A whole other Olympics that would be. Now what could accidentally happen to Gordon…

Sydney saved money by appealing to everyone’s patriotism and getting people to volunteer to staff the games. Free labour!

I did some volunteering for the Sydney games .. it was great and I managed to see some of the events. The atmosphere was tremendous .. didn’t you go Benji?The gymnastics is really good. Don’t miss them HarpyMarx. Forget about the money and all the other ‘political’ connortations, just enjoy yourself. I went to the World Cup in 1992 in Tokyo when I was living there .. that was good as well. Did the Mexican wave a few times!

Listening on the radio today about England getting to host the rugby world cup or summat like that. First thing Boris says is about how much money it’s going to bring in. Sod the sport, it’s all about money and who can make a profit. Could be world turnip chomping for all they care. Pah.
