I’m afraid Mr Springsteen was wrong: war IS good for some things… profits for military contractors, missile makers, gun manufacturers, bandage suppliers, PR companies… etc etc

Oliver, It was Edwin Starr who did ‘War’ originally (actually not strictly true it was The Temptations) and Springsteen did a cover version some time later.
Indeed war makes massive profits for the establishment and the creators of death and destruction (arms trade). But for the masses…war is good for absolutely nothing…

My seven year old son came out of school on Friday and asked me what is the point of war – apparently his teacher didn’t have an answer – and my answer was money. It makes money for war mongers and protects the money they already have. He understood.

And occasionally ridding the world of fascists like the Nazis.

If the Nazis hadn’t been supported by the monied knobs of this country then they wouldn’t have been able to wage war. Learn your history G-bay.

please explain? Thanks

It would have been better to have written the ‘monied knobs of the world’.

I know that the Nazis had a lot of external support, both financially and otherwise, especially in the UK, but in all the material I’ve read about WWII I’ve never come across the theory that this international support was a necessary condition for enabling Germany to wage war. If you have any references regarding this theory could you pass them on to us please; I for one would be interested to see them. Many thanks.

Richard, I am sure you know the support for fascism pre-war.

I know about
– Mosley and his Blackshirts (who were subsidised by Hitler, not the other way around)
– Rothermere and the Daily Mail
– Edward VIII
Between them these fruitloops hardly constituted societal support for fascism. Rather, it’s fair to say that from c1925-1935 most British people were tragically myopic about the various threats that Fascism posed, and from c1935-1939 were credulous in trusting Hitler as a negotiating partner.
Take away the likes of Mosley, Edward VIII, Rothermere, and Hitler’s ability to wage war would not have been reduced by one iota.
On the other hand, had Britain as a whole been more far-sighted in opposing Hitler’s consolidation of personal power and re-militarisation, the Second World War might (according to some eminent historians) have taken place five years earlier but been significantly shorter and less costly in terms of lives wasted. This simply reinforces the point (with which no sensible historians have ever disagreed) that, faced with Hitler, war was the only solution.

Oliver, yes, that was my understanding. There were various other social and political conditions that gave rise to fascism and the second world war. A monocasual explanation just based on, for example, financial support is just one aspect but one has to look at the bigger picture. Also, the ideology and politics was about smashing the workers’ movement which was well organised and confident in Germany. The ruling class in Britain was split in regards to Hitler and fascism.

Everyones obbsessed with money these days; hardly anyone with power gives a damn about anything else.We don’t need money to be happy – would you rather be rich or loose someone you love in war? I know what I’d choose and I know that war is totaly useless. Banksy’s right and I love how he isn’t afraid to voice his opinions.
I’m 16 and I’m not afraid to say how I feel. War is useless, like Gordon Brown.
