Comparing the EDL photos with the anti fascist photos it got me thinking that I could have predicted which people belonged to which group just by the fashion. Which further got me thinking about the whole Chav thing and Owen Jones book. I feel guilty about making the connection but we should recognise that capitalism has debased humanity to some degree and that includes members of the working class.

Harpy I don’t suppose you knew when you were taking these pictures that the EDL attempted to set fire to a photographer by throwing lighter fuel and setting fire to the guy’s clothes. Hopefully he is not too badly injured. Re your comment Steve are you saying that the edl are working class in the list leaked of BNP members not too long ago it seemed most of their members were of the petite bourgoise ilk (ex police men small business owners and so on) Also it is important to note that most the the people who intermarry with those from overseas are mostly working class

Hi Caroline, I only found out later about Jules, I know him, as I see him around when photographing. Appalled by what those fascist scum-bags did to him, they exposed to themselves for what they are…violent bastards!

What an attractive bunch – not.

The two comments about about class and identity and with reference to the word chav highlight what I think about that debate. I haven’t read the book but from what I’ve read in reviews I agree with a lot of the examples Owen Jones uses about the dehumanising of the working class but I personally use the word chav in a very different way. Whenever I use it I am describing anti-social elements – people who have no collective consciousness because they do whatever they please and terrorise others in the process. In my experience these people have not always been working class and possibly have rarely been. I used to live in Romford and I would describe a lot of people in Romford as chavs (not everyone of course) and Romford has a lot of petit-bourgeiois elements like white van men and tradespeople. I’m not drawing a direct correlation – just that I’ve never used the word chav to mean working class but maybe OJ is right and that is the sommon understanding… I don’t know.

The fashions are pretty much drawn from the soccer casuals scene, from which the EDL recruits and which, historically at least, has been pretty socially mixed, but with a skilled w.c./ petty-bourgeois dominance. Designer sportswear doesn’t come cheap.

Be fair, they look like pretty ordinary working class Brits to me. Or is that the problem ?

I have a vague memory that once, long ago, the left in the UK was dedicated to people like that.

“Comparing the EDL photos with the anti fascist photos it got me thinking that I could have predicted which people belonged to which group just by the fashion”

Yup. You could probably predict their social class and education the same way.

That is stretching it a little. History is full of the lefdt running pitched street battles with these sort of people.

Are th EDL working class? Probably. They are very small we must remember but we all know that the kind of ignorant views they hold are all too common. Just most people stop short of being drunken idiotioc thugs. Most people find that repellent.

Some EDL’ers look fairly normal to me Laban but others definitely do not. This is the woman on the coach who was attacked. a. She should not have been attacked. b. she is not an example of a ‘pretty ordinary working class Brit’: c. She does not look as badly hurt as she claimed to have been. The photo was taken a few minutes after the assault.

They look pretty normal to me. Most of the pubs round here have clientele who look like this. Decrying people because of fashion sense is just class snobbery.

Fascism is ugly and vile and these people represent it. End of!
