Anti-imperialism or bust…..

And now Salma Yaqoob has resigned from Respect, before that Kate Hudson said adieu. Yet the chaps at Socialist Unity continue with the defensiveness and blatant misogyny at anyone including Salma and Kate who dare to criticise Galloway (and indeed like two of the women who bravely commented on the “Defend Galloway” post I too wonder about what these guys are like in the real world, attitudes to women, personal politics and indeed would give them a very wide berth!). Oh, and the usual bilge being thrown around when it comes to stereotyping feminism.

I have been accused of being “pro-imperialist”, “Zionist” (!!!!) and “Islamophobic” (!!!!) by individuals who are sloppy thinkers and don’t provide evidence to back these assertions up. It pisses me off beyond belief. It also represents the politics of desperation and weakness. The reason I have been accused of this is because I believe that Assange should go to Sweden to face investigation by the cops. Nobody can predict the outcome of this, where the evidence takes you. I say evidence in a court of law (if it goes that far) where it’s tested as opposed to trial via the internet where many are dissecting this and making assumptions what rape is and isn’t. I have never ever seen this level of scrutiny by lefties and it worries me (especially as the two women are named… along with Craig Murray deciding to name and shame them again on national television which is a travesty to anonymity and not as Naomi Wolf appallingly maintains a “Victorian relic”…). I would prefer to wait for a police investigation and a trial regards to evidence not rely on documents on the internet, where people attempt to justify their piss-poor views on rape along with feeling entitled and confident in their assertions that it “aint rape”… Well hey, who made you knowledgeable on Swedish law and knowledgable about the actual evidence?!

What the apologists for Assange and Galloway do is actually make a mockery of anti-imperialism. The logic being don’t support Assange or indeed Galloway… ergo imperialist. Campism (for that is what it is) is an abuse of anti-imperialism, basically saying you are collaborating with the enemy. It makes a mockery of genuine anti-imperialism. It actually mirrors Bush’s, “With us or against us”…

The rhetoric of anti-imperialism is used to cover up serious crimes and that betrays anti-imperialism. It does the struggle no good, undermines and deters people especially in this women. What do the apologists of Assange and Galloway achieve? Nothing except disgust.Yet many will continue to describe them as shinning examples of anti-imperialism involved in slaying the monster of imperialism and western dominance. Yet alleged crimes are dismissed as the workings of CIA plots (nobody has ever shown any credible evidence on that one), along with conspiracy theories and the exhausting mental gymnastics used to deny and denigrate the allegations of these two women. Has anyone given a thought to these women? What they are going through? Or is it just the trials and tribulations of Assange?

I believe the Assange case aided and abetted by his apologist friend Galloway has damaged the left. I know many women (and men) who are appalled, angered and disappointed by reactions and behaviour. In many cases it has unleashed misogyny and pure vitriol. It has repelled many. The conclusion is that many are desperate to cling to this notion of anti-imperialism or bust. You are either with us or against us. As a socialist anti-imperialist feminist I believe that Assange should get on that plane to Sweden and put his side of the story. And before anyone argues that Sweden should give assurances, I will say why should they. Has the USA (since he has been in the UK) started or attempted to start legal proceedings in regards to the extradition of Assange? To me it seems like he is more scared of Sweden than he is of the USA. He  isn’t immune to the law and various lefties should face up to that. Instead many seem to create these false idols and worship them religiously. The cult of the personality is born and never ever criticise these poster boys of the left because you will experience the wrath. This idol worship (also it highlights just how desperate some are to defend a right-wing libertarian like Assange and he’s not Wikileaks!) has to stop because it repulses and pushes many away from the movement. And that is to our detriment….

  1. Gotta admit it looks to me like StJulian is just stalling. The allegations against him would constitute rape in my opinion. Like yourself I get annoyed at the woolly thinking around this issue, as I really dont see how anyone can with a straight face claim to be safer from deportation from the UK to the US than from Sweden to the US. Our leaders always and I mean always do exactly what they are told. This argument that StJulian is going to be extradited to the US via Sweden just doesnt stand up to any reasonable test of logic. Just because StJulian has done some good things in the opinion of some on the left doesn’t mean he doesn’t do other things that are totally wrong.

  2. Hi louise,

Sorry if you or others have responded to this elsewhere, but if you have I haven’t seen it.

I don’t disagree with anything about George Galloway, and I’ve no intention of trying to defend Julian Assange against any allegations that I know nothing about, however the Swedish prosecutors should explain the issues raised by Naomi Wolf – specifically why they are treating this (these) rape allegations differently from any other similar allegations they might have received ever that didn’t involve someone who had pissed off the USA. Equally, what the hell is Karl Rove doing working for the Swedish prosecutors. Without an answer to such questions, it’s hard not to see the Swedish prosecutors as using this allegation for political purposes.

Surely no feminist should be in favour of prosecuting rape charges in relation to the USA’s enemies and ignoring them in relation to other people? If it is the case that this is being treated from any other similar accusations wouldn’t that be a gross undermining of victims of rape by the Swedish government.

    Very well worded.

I came across this too, but (as you will remember) The reason I have been accused of this is because I felt that crude anti-imperialism led to racism towards Jews.

I hope you reflect on your own part usage of this type of terminology?

As you pointed out, “the cult of the personality is born and never ever criticise these poster boys of the left because you will experience the wrath”.

The same applies when you ask that a less than vulgar approaches taken to the Middle East, you go against the consensus, the male misogynistic consensus, which not only has many issues with women, but also hasn’t thought out its relationship to certain ethnic minorities.

I look forward to a reflective post, from you, on why shouting “Zionist” is wrong and how it is often used to close down any thoughtful debate on the topic of anti-Jewish racism.

This issue should make us all reflect on attitudes found in the British Left.

“however the Swedish prosecutors should explain the issues raised by Naomi Wolf – specifically why they are treating this (these) rape allegations differently from any other similar allegations they might have received ever that didn’t involve someone who had pissed off the USA. Where is the evidence to back these assertions up from Wolf? When it comes to Naomi Wolf I take everything that woman says with a very pinch of salt as she is one sloppy thinker along with her sloppy research. The woman thinks anonymity is a ‘Victorian relic’… disgraceful! How does she know “Sweden is treating these rape allegations differently”, what is this based on? Does she understand Swedish law? Speak Swedish re translating documents? Spoke to Swedish lawyers? Also, has the USA started extradition proceedings against Assange?

Also the link St Ulfsten refers to below is interesting.

      • Yes I had seen that Rudling article before, but didn’t think it was particularly convincing, not least of all in addressing how such cases are ordinarily dealt with by prosecutors. Maybe Sweden does have much higher levels of prosectuions in this area than most countries, but I haven’t seen anyone trying to make that case.

  4. “I believe the Assange case aided and abetted by his apologist friend Galloway has damaged the left.”

See, I take a different view. I think that its exposed a dark horrible underbelly in the left and now that everyone can see it, it cant just be ignored. Galloway is England’s Sheridan – the left will either be destroyed or pruned – either is a good thing. For a left this misogynist cannot continue.

With Yaqoob’s resignation it remains to be seen whether Galloway can be sufficiently marginalised given the amount of sychophants hanging on his coat-tails and whether Yaqoob, hopefully backed by Hutson and Ridley can create something out of this mess.

    • So Simon you’re not convinced by arguments by someone who tries to put forward facts and evidence but you are when someone like Wolf argued half-arsed assertions. I find it disturbing she is trying to smear these two women by having the gall of questioning who is paying for their lawyer. It’s a shitty thing she’s doing because she is trying to smear them with this conspiratorial crap ( who do think it is Naomi … Karl Rove? CIA? Cos it’s a honey trap, aint it) I never understand why people give Wolf the time of the day because she’s sloppy in her research and in the Assange case is damning these women based on zilch and it’s sad to see socialists falling for it. And she is no feminist just a flaky third wave commentator who damns women (her views on abortion are appalling and so are her views on rape)

      • what i’m not convinced about isn’t about wolf, but about whether the Swedish prosecutors consistently go to such lengths to prosecute in similar cases or whether they are singling out assange. I can’t see any facts or evidence being presented about this at all.

    • What do you mean by “go to such lengths to prosecute”? Issuing an arrest warrant for a wanted criminal is hardly extraordinary

      • What I mean by “go to such lengths” is the involvement of the Swedish and British Governments in attempting to extradite someone on rape allegations from people the accused had previously had relationship with. If this is normal for the Swedish Government then fine, but so far I’ve not seen any evidence that they normally do this. As for being a “wanted criminal” doesn’t that kind of assume guilt? I’ve got problems with both sides on this argument, not least with the awful mysogeny from supporters of Assange or Galloway, but you can’t argue that he should face a fair trial in Sweden, if you’ve already found him guilty.

  5. Little wonder I do not bother voting any more, if Respect is to the left and the twelve labour MP’s who are see as the left, boy the left is dead then

    • Eh what?
The English courts would never have gotten involved if Assange hadn’t fled from the Swedish police to the UK.
The investigation by the Swedish police is normal in all aspects, are you seriously suggesting that they just drop everything becasue Assange says he’s innocent? If you had read the English verdicts you’d see what he is accused of. He hasn’t had any previous relationsships with any of the two women and even if he had, that’s doesn’t matter. What matters is the lack of consent.

      • This is going round in circles. I don’t doubt Assange has a case to answer, but my question which you appear to avoid answering is about how consistently the Swedish authorities pursue such cases and whethrr they are singling out Assange for special treatment for some reason.

      • I don’t think there are any indications that this case is being pursued extra vigorously. The burden of proof should be on those that claim that Assange is being singled out.

  6. So you now have a pro imperialist and Zionist like Modernity supporting you, are you comfortable with this?

Galloway needs to be defended from such indivisuals, who in reality have no problem with the rape comments but every problem with his support for Palestinians and opposition to imperialist wars.

This whole affair is being blown way out of proportion, you talk about the usual bilge but that is what charcterises the hysteria being thrown at Galloway.

We recently had the story of the female prison officer who claimed an inmate had raped her and it was found beyond doubt that the woman had made it all up to get herself out of trouble! It seems to me that the feminists see no evil and hear no evil, I think they are the apologists rather than the Assange supporters, who are asking some pretty reasonable questions if you ask me.
